Blake joined the Shield Ranch team in 2016 as Director of Land Stewardship and advanced into key leadership roles. He strengthened our stewardship efforts and was instrumental in building the Shield Land Stewardship (SLS) Group. As CEO from January 2021 through December 2025, he guided SLS through a period of growth with clarity and purpose and helped ensure a smooth transition upon his retirement.
Blake served as internal project manager for the Campsite at Shield Ranch, delivering the project on time and on budget during the COVID-19 pandemic. He navigated uncharted territory while advancing innovative, sustainable systems. Following construction, Blake oversaw the management of the Campsite facilities and sustainable systems. He recently co-authored an article with The Meadows Center for Water and the Environment, “Supplied by the Sky: The First Rainwater-Sourced Public Water System in Texas, USA.”
Blake advanced major conservation milestones, including the establishment and expansion of the National Historic District and the 2024 conservation easement with the City of Austin at Shield Ranch Barton Creek, and at Shield Ranch Camp Wood the federal mitigation bank for the conservation of endangered species and three conservation easements with The Nature Conservancy. Under his leadership, Shield Ranch Barton Creek achieved both International Dark Sky and Quiet Place designations.
Blake oversaw wildlife management and water conservation programs including hunting, control of exotic species, habitat improvements, and secured numerous grants to help fund these land stewardship efforts. He coordinated and expanded scientific research across the Ranches and created a natural resources college internship program. Blake oversaw key infrastructure improvements such as construction and remodeling of homes, outbuildings, roads, and water systems. He also brought care and diligence to complex issues, such as eminent domain, land surveys and appraisals, legal and compliance matters, and supported advocacy efforts for the Stop Fitzhugh Concert Venue coalition.
We are deeply grateful for Blake’s leadership and lasting contributions to Shield Ranch.
Please join us in expressing our appreciation and best wishes to Blake.
