Vera Ayres Bowen is a third-generation owner of the Shield Ranch. As Vice-President of the Shield Ranch Foundation and President of El Ranchito Summer Camp, Vera oversees the education and outreach programs at the Ranch. She is passionate about providing opportunities for children and adults to experience beauty and mystery in the natural world. She looks forward to ongoing opportunities to host contemplative ecology retreats on the Ranch.
Vera also serves as President of the Shield-Ayres Foundation, a nonprofit family foundation supporting human services, social justice and environmental conservation and she serves on the boards of AROCHA USA and Lumen Center for Mission and Spirituality. She also enjoys actively serving as a member of her church.
Vera loves exploring the natural world and expressing gratitude through artistic expression. She enjoys sharing the ranch with her grown children and their spouses: Marshall (and his wife Madison), Gentry (and his wife Margaret), Sophie (and her husband Johann), and Mallory. Vera earned a BA in Religion from the University of the South. Born and raised in San Antonio, she now lives in Austin.
